Je ne regrette rien: Macron defends his comments on not being US ‘vassal’ over Taiwan

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 02:18:17 GMT

French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday insisted that France’s dispatch of a frigate to Taiwan showed its commitment to regional security, but doubled down on his remarks that France would not act as a “vassal” by following U.S. hardliners into a conflict over the democratic island. “Being allies doesn’t mean being vassals … Just because we are allies, just because we do things together that we decide to do, doesn’t mean that we don’t have the right to think on our own and that we will follow the most extreme people in a country that is allied with us,” Macron said during a joint press conference with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on a visit to the Netherlands. “When we look at the facts, France has no lessons to learn from anyone, not in the Ukrainian theater, nor the Sahel theater, nor the Taiwan theater,” Macron said. His comments come after he told POLITICO and the French newspaper Les Echos that ...

Your tax refund could be smaller than last year. Here’s why

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 02:18:17 GMT

NEW YORK (AP) — Expecting a tax refund? It could be smaller than last year. And with inflation still high, that money won’t go as far as it did a year ago.The 90 million taxpayers who have filed as of March 31 got refunds that were an average of nearly 10% less than last year, in part due to pandemic relief programs expiring. The filing deadline for most taxpayers is Tuesday. The average refund is $2,910, down from $3,226, a difference of more than $300, according to the most recent IRS data. For many households, especially working families, the tax refund is the biggest one-time financial windfall of the year, said Kathy Pickering, chief tax officer of H&R Block.“We know that working families in general are the most cash-strapped,” she said, adding that the expanded earned income tax and child tax credits during the COVID pandemic provided a lot of benefits for families with children. The child tax credit, for example, is reverting to $2,0...

By STAN CHOE (AP Business Writer)NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are wavering in mixed trading Wednesday following the latest update to show inflation continues to cool. The S&P 500 was 0.1% lower in afternoon trading after bouncing between small gains and losses earlier. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 48 points, or 0.1%, at 33,732, as of 2:38 p.m. Eastern time, while the Nasdaq composite fell 0.5%.The main focus on Wall Street for more than a year has been high inflation and how much painful medicine the Federal Reserve will have to dole out to contain it. That’s still well above the Federal Reserve’s comfort level, and some underlying trends within the data were also concerning. That weighed down financial markets. But on the upside for investors, the overall inflation number was still better than the 5.2% that economists expected. It also marked a...
