CAIRO, N.Y. (NEWS10) -High schoolers at the Cairo-Durham School District spent their spring break helping out in Costa Rica. Coming up to the end of their school year, they share just how meaningful the experience was for them.“By the end of the trip none of us wanted to leave. It was really heartbreaking for all of us to go back home to the states because we just wanted to stay there. We didn’t know when we could see them again,” said Natalie McGuire, high school sophomore. Thailand refugee graduates from Russell Sage A graduation requirement at Cairo-Durham is to have a certain amount of volunteer hours. For these five students, they decided to take their hobby of helping out others outside of their local community. The students say the experience was educational, helping them as well. “I was really nervous about the language barrier. A 17-year-old has been arrested in Wednesday's stabbing of a Metro bus driver in Woodland Hills, police announced at a news conference Thursday afternoon. His name is not being released given his status as a juvenile, however, police continue to share a surveillance photo of him from inside the bus.The stabbing occurred around 5:15 p.m. at Erwin Street and Topanga Canyon Boulevard after a verbal argument over "fare evasion," investigators said. A man was arrested Thursday after a woman was found stabbed to death in downtown Los Angeles in April.The suspect was identified as 39-year-old Robert Hughes by the Los Angeles Police Department.On April 22, officers responded to calls of a suspicious death investigation at an apartment complex on the 1200 block of South Hope Street.When police arrived, they found the victim, 29-year-old Amy Albeno-Mendoza, dead at the scene. Coroners discovered the woman had suffered a fatal stab wound.Homicide detectives investigated and on May 4, discovered the suspect had fled the state and traveled to Phoenix, Arizona.Authorities located the suspect at a homeless shelter in Phoenix where he was taken into custody. A 17-year-old suspect was arrested Thursday for the stabbing of a Metro bus driver in Woodland Hills.Using community tips and surveillance footage, LAPD identified the male teen and made the arrest at his San Fernando Valley residence.“The community stepped forward and began working with us, providing tips and leads that we’ve worked through,” LAPD Chief Michel Moore said in a press conference Thursday. “I’m happy to report… that this individual has been identified and our follow up investigation has resulted in his arrest and he is in our custody.”The incident occurred Wednesday around 5:15 p.m. as the suspect and driver both exited the bus after a dispute. (AP) — The New England Patriots have been docked two days of organized team activities for violating NFL rules about offseason practices, a person familiar with the league’s decision told The Associated Press.The person spoke to the AP on Thursday on the condition of anonymity because the penalty wasn’t announced.The penalties were first reported by ESPN. WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand golfer Michael Hendry will miss this year’s British Open while receiving treatment for leukemia.Hendry, who has won tournaments on the Australian and Japan tours and most recently won the Vic Open in Australia in February, was diagnosed with leukemia in April.He has undergone one course of chemotherapy and is in remission. The 43-year-old said he has a “90%” chance of a full recovery.Hendry expects to have three more cycles of chemotherapy and will be back in Auckland Hospital from Monday.“The last six weeks have seen me in hospital undergoing treatment to try and rid myself of the disease,” he said in a social media post. “I have a long battle ahead of me.“This is the fight of my life, a fight for my life, but one I am determined to win.”Hendry had qualified for the British Open and was due to play the tournament for the third time.
