The Minnesota Court of Appeals has affirmed a Washington County District Court judge’s decision to affirm the city of Stillwater’s issuance of a conditional-use permit to Stillwater Towing regarding the company’s expansion plans.Stillwater resident Thomas Coleman, the petitioner, had challenged Judge Siv Mjanger’s summary-judgment dismissal of his claims and argued the court should order city officials to rescind the conditional-use permit granted to Stillwater Towing and mandate that the owner of the business comply with the city’s tree-cutting ordinance.Mjanger granted summary judgment in favor of the city and Stillwater Towing and dismissed Coleman’s claims. In her order, Mjanger wrote that Coleman made no showing that Stillwater Towing was in violation of the tree-cutting ordinance or that the city had failed to perform a mandatory duty.“We are pleased another court recognized that the City of Stillwater made a well-reasoned decision when it issued a conditional-use permit to St...

Explore The Intricate Tapestry of Love As It Spun Out In Real Life With Alan Mack’s Intimate And “Stranger Than Fiction” True Case Study Of Love And The Science Behind It

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 05:34:37 GMT

Can a fleeting, ineffable event so alter a person’s brain chemistry that thirty-five years later, nearly to the day, his life—his ordinary, slightly above-average, but otherwise unexceptional suburban life—can be turned upside down and inside out?“Children Of An Idle Brain” is the true story of how, given the right circumstances, it really can happen. This book is a case study, in real time—time stretching over much of an adult life—of the power of that thing of which songwriter Cole Porter asked: “What is this thing called love? This funny thing called love. Just who can solve its mystery? Why should it make a fool of me?”But make a fool of us love can and does. It did happen to Alan Mack, that ordinary, above-average suburban guy—a good husband, a good family man, a good boss, a good friend, someone you might meet for a drink after work—who thought he had a firm grip on life, but who otherwise won’t be worth reading a book about, except that he fell victim to “that funny thing cal...

HAYWARD — It all started at 10:20 p.m. on Oct. 8, when 35-year-old Razma Mohammed-Ibrahim ran to her neighbors’ door, frantically stating that she found her 51-year-old husband dead from stab wounds and needed them to call 911.But now, the Hayward police investigation has ended with the arrested of Mohammed-Ibrahim on charges of arranging the murder of her husband, Parwiz Assar, along with her 21-year-old lover, Samim Azizi. Report: Ultraprocessed foods now account for 2/3rds of teens’ diet

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 05:34:37 GMT

By Katie Hunt | CNNChildren and teens in the United States now get more than two-thirds of their calories from ultraprocessed foods, an analysis of almost two decades worth of data has found.Ultraprocessed foods – such as frozen pizza, microwave meals, packaged snacks and desserts – accounted for 67% of calories consumed in 2018, up from 61% in 1999, according to research published in the medical journal JAMA Tuesday. The study analyzed the diet of 33,795 children and adolescents nationwide. While industrial processing can keep food fresher longer and allow some foods to be fortified with vitamins, it modifies food to change its consistency, taste and color to make it more palatable, cheap and convenient – using processes that aren’t used in home-cooked meals. They are also aggressively marketed by the food industry.“Some whole grain breads and dairy foods are ultra-processed, and they’re healthier than other ultra-processed foods,” said senior author Fang Fang Zhang, a nutrition and...

Letters: Oakland on brink | Climate policies | Leadership failure | Anti-Semitic trope | Conflict prolonged | Path to peace

From 1951 until 1993 I lived in the flatlands of the Fruitvale District in Oakland. As youngsters, we could go trick-or-treating safely with no adult supervision. Now all the houses there have metal bars on their windows and fences around their yards.Until Oakland comes to grips with its crime, drug and homelessness issues it will continue to lose businesses, restaurants, sports teams, etc. And it’s a tragedy because Oakland is a physically beautiful city with a historically significant past, and creative, industrious people. Why Oaklanders continue to elect progressive, left-wing, failed politicians who do nothing but foster misery remains one of life’s great mysteries.Paul StoneDublinSchool closures werefailure of leadershipI have previously written to The Times about what a failure of government and lead...

49ers’ Brock Purdy taking healthier body, stronger arm into Seattle

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 05:34:37 GMT

SANTA CLARA — As Brock Purdy humbly sits atop the NFL’s passing leaders, he reflected back to July, when he began “ripping” 50-yard passes with accuracy with his surgically repaired arm. A couple of weeks later, he promptly opened training camp with two deep overthrows, all in search of consistency and arm strength.“It’s been a work in progress back to camp,” Purdy said Tuesday. “Once the season hit, I was able to do it.”Purdy’s long ball is a long-sought element the 49ers (7-3) are using to their highlight-reel benefit as they go visit the Seattle Seahawks (6-2) on Thanksgiving night. When Purdy made his first career road start there last December, his arm was healthy but a broken rib almost kept him out of the lineup, and it still hindered what he could throw in that 21-13, division-clinching win.“Anything that just made me really coil up and absolutely rip it,” Purdy recalled of his play-call limitations. “The...
