Commission sets new reduced limits for nitrites and nitrates as food additives

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 11:36:34 GMT

To ensure that the food on the market in the EU is as safe as possible for consumers and protect them from carcinogenic substances as part of the actions under Europe's Beating Cancer Plan, the Commission is setting new limits for the use of nitrites and nitrates as food additives. These new significantly reduced limits protect against pathogenic bacteria (e.g., Listeria, Salmonella, Clostridia), as well as reduce the exposure to nitrosamines, some of which are carcinogenic. Based on a stringent scientific assessment by EFSA, the new limits were endorsed unanimously by the member states last spring.Health and Food Safety Commissioner Stella Kyriakides said: “Our citizens expect the peace of mind that comes with safe food to eat, this has always been a cornerstone of my mandate. Today, by setting new limits for nitrites and nitrates additives in food, we are taking another step in this direction and delivering on another important action under Europe's Beating Cancer Plan. College Football Corner: Terps one of several unbeaten teams to tumble

Dave Preston is an AP Top 25 voter. Read his latest rankings here. The first Saturday of October brought a few autumn winds that changed the directions of more than a few college football seasons. Maryland learned about “Moving Month” the hard way as their attempt to move into the Big Ten Contenders category was denied by a blueblood wearing scarlet and gray. And, the Terps weren’t the only team to fall from the ranks of the unblemished. In Dallas at the Cotton Bowl, No. 12 Oklahoma used a last-minute touchdown to say that Texas might be back, but they’re no longer unbeaten. Six other FBS schools would go down in defeat for the first time this fall, from SEC pretenders Kentucky and Missouri to Pac-12 loyalist Washington State, plus potential playoff gate-crashers Fresno State and Marshall. I thought that No. 5 USC would join that bunch after falling behind 17-0 in the first half at home, and while the Trojans were pushed to within an inch of their lives late Sa...

HYDERABAD, India (AP) — Netherlands won the toss and elected to field Monday against a New Zealand lineup that will be missing skipper Kane Williamson for a second successive game at the Cricket World Cup. New Zealand made a big statement with a thumping nine-wicket win over defending champion England in the tournament opener last week. Tom Latham will again lead the team in the absence of injured Williamson. Fast bowler Lockie Ferguson returned from injury to replace James Neesham in the only change to New Zealand’s XI. Netherlands made two changes to the lineup that lost to Pakistan, with allrounder Sybrand Engelbrecht and fast bowler Ryan Klein replacing Saqib Zulfiqar and the injured Logan van Beek.Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra dominated the England bowlers with aggressive unbeaten centuries as New Zealand made short work of the 283-run target.Ravindra has been revelation for the Black Caps with his brilliant all-round performance in the absence of Williamson, who is expected...

Silencio y tensión: cómo se vivió detrás de escena el debate presidencial de Argentina

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 11:36:34 GMT
