Spanish soccer federation asks UEFA for suspension in apparent leverage play to protect Rubiales GENEVA (AP) — The Spanish soccer federation has asked UEFA to suspend it from international competitions because of government interference over demands to remove its beleaguered president Luis Rubiales from office. The move was widely seen as an attempt to silence some of Rubiales’ critics, including government ministers who have asked for his removal, as such a suspension would ban Spanish teams from competitions like the Champions League and could sway public opinion in favor of letting him keep his job. Soccer’s governing bodies have long-standing rules barring national governments from interfering with the running of the domestic soccer federations. However, UEFA will not comply with the Spanish federation’s request for a sanction, a person familiar with the issue told The Associated Press on Monday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision-making process was confidential.Rubiales has faced a torrent of criticism from around the globe ov...

Federal government’s back-to-office push could be latest DC housing market challenge The push by federal government agencies, now at the direction of the Biden Administration, to aggressively bring employees back to the workplace impacts tens of thousands of federal government employees in the D.C. region who have been working remotely under pandemic-era loosened telework schedules.Like their private-sector counterparts who found themselves able to work from anywhere during the pandemic, some D.C. area federal government employees relocated to larger homes or more affordable areas away from the District. The migration trends began surfacing early in the pandemic in residential sales trends.“Some of the places we saw the strongest market activity were out in the Fauquier County, Warren County and Winchester areas in Virginia, and we also saw Frederick County in Maryland, which actually had one of the fastest-paced housing markets in the country,” said Lisa Sturtevant, chief economist at mid-Atlantic listing service Bright MLS.Those trends were driven by a ...

Illinois judge refuses to dismiss case against father of parade shooting suspect CHICAGO (AP) — A judge on Monday refused to dismiss the case against a father who helped his son obtain a gun license three years before authorities say the younger man fatally shot seven people at a 2022 Fourth of July parade in suburban Chicago.Illinois prosecutors charged Robert Crimo Jr. under a unconstitutionally vague law, his lawyer argued at a hearing earlier this month in Waukegan, north of Highland Park where the shooting took place.Lake County Judge George Strickland rejected that argument, as well as a defense contention that prosecutors charged Crimo Jr. too late — after a three-year statute of limitations had passed. The court’s rulings mean Crimo Jr.’s Nov. 6 trial will go head as previously scheduled. The judge said at the hearing earlier in August that he would take three weeks to mull a decision, and he announced his ruling at a Monday hearing, which was also in Waukegan. He heard additional arguments on the statute of limitations issue Monday before ru...

This is the largest study to look at the neurodegenerative disease in young people.Researchers found about 40% of the brains studied had developed some of the earliest signs of the disease, which is associated with repeated head trauma. The study also includes what researchers believe to be the first case of an American female athlete diagnosed with the disease. The report, published in JAMA Neurology on Monday, describes the features of 152 brains donated between February 1, 2008, and September 31, 2022, to the UNITE brain bank — the largest tissue repository in the world focused on traumatic brain injury and CTE. Sixty-three out of the 152 donated brains (41%) had autopsy-confirmed CTE.The disease can only be formally diagnosed with an autopsy and has been assoc...

Phillips: The Trop rules – if you don’t have to play there TAMPA – Fielding is no easy task at Tropicana Field. Just ask Harrison Bader. The Yankees centerfielder had a problem with the domed stadium’s off-white ceiling, which has four catwalks, on Saturday when the Rays’ Josh Lowe lofted a pitch in the third inning. The contact resulted in an RBI double after Bader lost track of the ball and overran its landing spot.“It would have been a really, really good catch,” Bader, one of baseball’s best defenders, said after the Yankees’ 3-0 loss. “On the way down, I just lost it.”Bader went on to say that The Trop is, “Not my favorite. You know, turf is a little sticky. ‘Joe the Plumber,’ who famously confronted Obama on the campaign trail, dead at 49 By Brian Niemietz | New York Daily News (TNS)Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, better known as political activist “Joe the Plumber,” is dead at 49.Wurzelbacher gained prominence in 2008 when he met then-candidate Barack Obama in Ohio during the future president’s 2008 presidential campaign. The Republican activist told Obama he was interested in opening a plumbing business and asked how the Democratic candidate’s tax plan would impact that venture. Wurzelbacher’s on-camera questions, along with his everyman demeanor, earned him the Joe the Plumber moniker. He built that persona into a brand that netted a book deal and led to a flirtation with the country music business, according to Politico. Wurzelbacher ran for office in 2012 but was soundly defeated by Democrat Marcy Kaptur in the race to represent Ohio’s ninth congressional district. One thing he wasn’t was a licensed plumber, according to the Columbia Dispatch, which reported “Joe the Plumber” never completed an apprenticeship, nor was...
