With America’s 10th largest city set to vote next month on a multi-billion dollar budget, homelessness, crime, and soaring housing costs remain at the forefront for many of San Jose’s 1 million residents.Amid economic uncertainty and wrangling at City Hall on how to spend $5.2 billion in the coming year, Mayor Matt Mahan already has debuted his priorities: a shift from permanent housing to interim housing for the city’s homeless residents and hiring more police staff — proposals that the city’s progressive activists and councilmembers are likely to protest. The mayor — who was elected on a campaign that promised to return “back to basics” and to reign in City Hall’s responsibilities — comes in as San Jose enjoys a $35 million budget surplus. It was one of those moments that sticks with you long after it’s actually happened.Johanna and Klara Söderberg were harmonizing through an awe-inspiring version of the Christine McVie-penned Fleetwood Mac classic “Songbird,” accompanied solely by Klara’s softly reassuring work on the acoustic guitar, in front of a sold-out crowd at the Fox Theater in Oakland on Monday (May 15).The sisters, who are better known as the Swedish country-folk-rock-pop duo First Aid Kit, had prefaced the song by speaking to the audience about how much they loved Fleetwood Mac and how “devastated” they were by McVie’s death late last year at the age of 79.The 2,800 people in attendance treated the song with reverence, remaining quiet as the sisters’ continued through the richly emotional and delicate number. Then, at its conclusion, the crowd suddenly erupted, showering First Aid Kit — as well as the memory of McVie and, really, this particular moment i...Man who fell off pier near SF Presidio rescued, transported to hospital in critical condition

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Elon Musk was on Twitter Monday night, taking aim at two of his frequent targets: downtown San Francisco and "wokeness." "The disaster that is downtown SF, once beatiful (sic) and thriving, now a derelict zombie apocalypse, is due to the woke mind virus," the Tesla CEO tweeted in response to a tweet about Dave Chappelle's recent SF appearance. ‘I’m broken hearted by SF’: Small business owners struggle with post-pandemic changes "Dave Chappelle skewers San Francisco's downfall, blames woke leadership," read the tweet Musk was responding to. During a surprise, last-minute appearance at the Masonic last week, Chappelle reportedly asked the audience, "What the f--k happened to this place?" A report in SFGate singled out Chappelle's performance for containing transphobic "dog whistles," but made no mention of the comedian calling out the city's "woke leadership." DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) — Rick Hendrick sees the enormous talent in Ross Chastain. The veteran team owner also sees Chastain’s sometimes reckless style that leaves damaged cars and angry competitors in his wake. Chastain’s late crash off a restart took himself and Hendrick star driver Kyle Larson out of contention as they were racing for the lead at Darlington over the weekend. An earlier tangle with Chastain ended the chances of another NASCAR champion, pole sitter Martin Truex Jr., who had led 145 of the first 151 laps at the Goodyear 400. The wreck with Larson helped another Hendrick racer, William Byron, grab the lead and hold off Kevin Harvick for his third victory this season. But it was Chastain’s actions that again stole NASCAR’s show. Hendrick said he believes the Trackhouse Racing driver has crossed a line. “You just don’t run people up in the fence,” Hendrick said. “He’s going to make a lot of enemies and it’s hard to win a champion...Md. universities receive more than $2.5 million through federal grant to train, hire mental health support
